3 dead from drowning on New Year's Day


Three separate incidents of drowning were recorded on the first day of the New Year, according to reports from dzBB on Tuesday.

According to a report by Ivy Valdez, a young man died in Barangay Tagumpay, Roxas, Palawan after he and his friends and family celebrated by going swimming near a dam at 2 p.m.

Barangay Captain Merlinda Herrera said that a search commenced 20 minutes after the victim failed to resurface. 

He was eventually found dead.

Another young man died after he went swimming in the sea in Barangay Bacungan in San Pedro, Puerto Princesa at around 2:00 in the afternoon.

He was pulled out of the water after a foreigner found his pale and unmoving body.

Meanwhile, Decemay Padilla reported the death of a 14-year-old in Barangay Santo Niño, Cebu.

According to Cebu City Provincial Risk Reduction Management Office Harold Alcontin, the PDRRMO, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, and the SRP Patrol responded to the report at 5:28 p.m.

The team was able to find the victim’s body at 7:04 p.m.

The victim’s aunt said that her nephew, who was an epileptic, may have hit his head before drowning as a wound was found on the body. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
