8-year-old boy dies after being beaten by drunken dad

An 8-year-old boy died after getting beaten by his drunken father in General Santos City.

According to a "24 Oras" report by Jes Jumamil of GMA Regional TV One Mindanao, the victim Yurie Canlaon, was badly beaten by his father inside their house in Barangay Fatima in General Santos City on Tuesday.

Based on the police investigation, his 34-year-old father, Roy Canlaon Jr., was said to be always intoxicated when coming home.

Roy went home drunk and started beating up Yurie.  He also pushed his son towards their bed.

Yurie sustained bruises and broken bones during the incident.  He was brought to the hospital but died Thursday. 

"Dahil daw sa kanyang kalasingan di niya daw alam ang kanyang ginagawa so 'yun ang allegation niya. 'Yun din ang pagkasabi ng mga batang kapatid. Binagsak daw," said Police Major Wesley Matillano, Station Commander of Police Station 7 in General Santos City.

One of Yurie's siblings said their father beat their youngest sister first before hurting Yurie.

The mother of the victim was in Manila looking for a job when the incident happened.  She immediately returned home to attend to her son's remains.

The suspect, who was already in jail, cried and apologized to his family.

"Kahapon na file-an ng kaso serious physcial injury in connection sa Republic Act 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act). Nag-expired na ang bata kaninang 3 a.m. so malamang magdagdag tayo ng supplemental affidavit para mahulog sa parricide ang kaso," Matillano said. —Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
