6,000 residents affected by drought in Maguindanao receive relief goods from GMA Kapuso Foundation

The municipality of South Upi in Maguindanao del Sur is just one among many that wasn't spared by the drought brought on by El Niño.

For the Lambangian indigenous group, corn is not just a staple in their diet but also their main source of livelihood, according to "24 Oras" on Monday.

"Kung meron silang harvest, nagseseperate sila ng intended sa kanilang pagkain, 'yung the rest 'yung pinapabenta nila," said Edgardo Calantungan Jr., vice chairman of the Lambangian People's Organization.

Their crops, however, have dried up due to the drought. Alfredo Angit, a resident, said in the report that he and his family have been relying on saba banana to tide them over.

"Diskarte namin, sa umaga saging lang ang pagkain namin, tinitiis na lang namin," he said.

Recently, around 6,000 residents living in the remote areas of South Upi received relief goods from GMA Kapuso Foundation, the Philippine Army, the local government of South Upi, and Eurotel. The indigenous Lambangian and the Muslim community were also among the beneficiaries.

A feeding program was also held for the children.

For those who wish to help, GMA Kapuso Foundation accepts donations via bank deposits, Cebuana Lhuillier, Shopee, Lazada, GCash, and Metrobank credit card.
