PHIVOLCS: 8 volcanic earthquakes recorded at Taal Volcano
Eight volcanic earthquakes, including five tremors, were recorded at the Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, state seismologists said Tuesday.
In a bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the seismic activities lasted two to four minutes.
An average of 3,823 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day were emitted as of May 20, while PHIVOLCS noted an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake.
The emission reached 2,400 meters tall and drifted west-northwest, PHIVOLCS added.
Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest.
Under such an alert status, possible hazards include sudden phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.
Entry into the Taal Volcano Island and the permanent danger zone is prohibited, and the vicinity of the volcano is a no-fly zone. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/VBL, GMA Integrated News
