10 volcanic earthquakes detected at Taal Volcano in past 24 hours

Ten volcanic earthquakes, including three tremors, were recorded at Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, state seismologists said on Wednesday.

In a bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the seismic activities lasted two to four minutes.

An average of 3,823 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day were emitted as of May 20, while PHIVOLCS noted an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake.

The emission reached 1,500 meters tall and drifted west-northwest, PHIVOLCS added.

PHIVOLCS also recorded eight volcanic quakes along with five tremors on Monday.

According to state seismologists, volcanic earthquakes are “induced by rising lava or magma beneath active volcanoes.”

Meanwhile, volcanic tremors “can be caused by different processes inside the volcano, including resonance triggered by magma or magmatic gas flowing through cracks and vents, successive overlapping low-frequency earthquakes, and eruption of magma,'' PHIVOLCS said.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest.

Under such an alert status, possible hazards include sudden phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

Entry into the Taal Volcano Island and the permanent danger zone is prohibited, and the vicinity of the volcano is a no-fly zone. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/VBL, GMA Integrated News
