DOT advises travelers to monitor Kanlaon advisories

The Department of Tourism on Tuesday advised the public to stay informed and alert when traveling to areas affected by Mount Kanlaon's eruption on Negros Island.

In an advisory, the DOT said that their Region 6 and 7 offices have been ordered to closely monitor and make necessary preparations within their respective areas.

Kanloan began erupting on Monday evening, emitting five-kilometer-high plumes into the atmosphere.

As of Tuesday, 1,562 individuals or 210 families in Negros Occidental have reportedly been displaced by the eruption, which has affected up to 84 barangays in over 10 different cities and municipalities.

All tourism sites and activities in Canlaon City, as well as tourism-related activities within the volcano's Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), have also been suspended.

“Tourists, Tourism-Related Establishments (TREs), and the general public are likewise advised that entry to the Mt. Kanlaon Nature Park is strictly prohibited… Travelers are strongly advised to avoid the PDZ which extends a 4-kilometer radius from the summit,” the statement read.

The DOT also reminded travelers to monitor flight activity due to possible delays and cancellations caused by the volcanic eruption.

“If your travel plans are affected by the volcanic activity, it is important to make timely arrangements with your accommodation providers,” the statement added.

Negros Island has since been placed on Alert Level 2, with the agency warning of a potential for increased volcanic activity that may lead to minor eruptions or significant ashfall. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
