SUV rams into parked motorcycles in Cebu City; 1 dead, 1 hurt
One died while another was wounded when a white sport utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into motorcycles parked at the roadside in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.
The casualty was identified as a 55-year-old farmer who was about to ferry the spices he harvested to the buyer’s location.
The victim parked his motorcycle at the roadside along Governor Cuenco Avenue in Barangay Banilad at around 4 a.m. on June 15, 2024 while waiting for someone.
The other person who sustained injuries was identified as a 26-year-old food delivery rider who parked his motorcycle behind the motorcycle of the farmer.
According to the investigator at the Cebu City Police Office - Traffic Enforcement Unit (CCPO-TEU), the delivery rider heard of the zoom of a vehicle; when he turned to look, the SUV was heading for their direction.
“Naghunong silang duha dihang dapita, unya mao na lang nadunggan aning usa nga naghaguros nga sakyanan, unya paglingi niya, lamba na sila,” according to Police Master Sergeant Christopher Bongo, traffic investigator.
A witness recounted that he saw the 55-year-old farmer onboard his motorcycle and that the impact plowed the motorcycle along with the farmer a few meters from where he was parking.
The 32-year-old SUV driver was placed under hospital arrest while seeking medical attention as he also sustained injuries.
As of posting time, the authorities are yet to determine whether the SUV driver was drunk or that he dozed off while driving.
The family of the SUV driver vowed to shoulder the medical expenses of the delivery rider who was hurt, and the farmer who was killed in the incident.
Reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, physical injuries, and damage to properties will be filed against the SUV driver.
In a separate incident, a five-month-old baby boy died after his parents figured in a vehicular accident at the national road in Barangay Kalunasan, Calape town in the Province of Bohol.
The infant’s 21-year-old mother was driving the motorcycle on the way to the hospital to have the baby checked as he was having a fever. It was the baby’s father who was riding pillion, carrying the baby. But when the mother had overtaken a vehicle, she collided with another motorcycle.
The woman, because of the impact, hit a tricycle that was tailing the other motorcycle.
According to the Calape Municipal Police Station, the couple was traveling from Inabanga town and was heading for Tagbilaran City for the supposed medical check-up.
The child was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, while his parents sustained severe injuries. They are now recuperating at the hospital.
The driver of the other motorcycle and two persons onboard the tricycle reportedly sustained minor injuries.
As of posting time, no charges were filed yet in relation to the incident.
“Ang pahimangno sa PNP Calape, kuan na lang magmatngon gyud ta mag-drive, dili magtanga-tanga kay makaangin pud ta sa ubang nga motorista diha sa dalan," Police Master Sergeant Alexander Mijares, investigator of the Calape Municipal Police Station, said. —GMA Regional TV
