Dengue deaths in Palawan rise to 19; cases in Iloilo City decline

There have been 19 deaths from dengue in Palawan so far this year, while cases of the mosquito-borne viral disease have declined in Iloilo City.

According to a report by Super Radyo Palawan’s Ivy Valdez on Super Radyo dzBB, the deaths in Palawan include five in the town of Narra, four in Puerto Princesa, three died in Taytay, two in Rizal, and one each in Roxas, Coron, Busuanga, Linapacan, and Balabac.

Thirty people in total have succumbed to dengue in the MIMAROPA region, the report said.

In a separate report by Super Radyo Iloilo’s Sevein Hope Gegantoca, there have been 215 dengue cases in Iloilo City recorded from January 1 to July 6 of this year, a 39.6% decline from the 356 cases logged in the same period last year.

City Health Office medical officer Roland Fortuna said no new dengue-related deaths have been recorded in the city so far this year.

According to the World Health Organization, dengue virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

A person with dengue may experience the symptoms four to 10 days after a mosquito bite.

Among the symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pains, nausea, and rashes. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA Integrated News
