CHR deploys teams to probe deaths of officials in Pampanga, Maguindanao del Sur
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has deployed quick response teams to look into the deaths of two local officials in Pampanga and Maguindanao del Sur.
Barangay captain Norberto Lumbang was gunned down by unidentified suspects in front of the barangay hall in Barangay Lacquios in Arayat, Pampanga last August 11.
The CHR said that Lumbang has earlier signified his intention to run as vice mayor in the 2025 midterm elections.
Meanwhile, South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur vice mayor Roldan Benito and his bodyguard Weng Marcos were killed last August 2 in Barangay Pandan after armed individuals attacked their vehicle.
The CHR expressed concern on the recent incidents as the midterm elections next year draw closer.
“Given the upcoming 2025 midterm elections, these acts of violence against officials will also impact the safe environment for every Filipino voter and their right to freely participate in electoral processes,” the agency said in a statement. “Not only do these instill fear amongst constituents, but also send a threat amongst local leaders and candidates seeking to serve the public.”
“Whether this incident is politically-motivated or not, we emphasize that every human being has the right to live without fear of harm of violence,” it added.
The CHR said that law enforcement agencies are also investigating the killings.
“The CHR advises the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities in their communities that could jeopardize their safety and peace,” it said. —Vince Angrelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
