Kanlaon Volcano emits ash twice —PHIVOLCS

Two ash emission events were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Tuesday that lasted 16 to 22 minutes long, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday.

PHIVOLCS shared the time-lapse footage of the ash emission from the Kanlaon Volcano summit crater logged from 1:53 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. and 5:23 a.m. to 5:39 a.m. on January 21.

“These events generated superheated and grayish plumes that rose 300 meters above the crater before drifting west as recorded by Thermal Camera in Lower Masulog (VKLM) station in Canlaon City,” PHIVOLCS said.

As of Wednesday, a voluminous 200-meter tall plume was observed at Kanlaon Volcano that drifted general west.

Eleven volcanic earthquakes, including two volcanic tremors were also recorded. The volcano’s edifice also remained inflated.

Alert Level 3 is currently raised over Kanlaon Volcano which straddles the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. This signals a magmatic unrest following its eruption on December 9, 2024.

Evacuation of residents from the six-kilometer radius around the volcano’s summit is recommended.

Possible hazards that may occur include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains, PHIVOLCS said. —Giselle Ombay/KG, GMA Integrated News
