PNP developing ‘significant’ leads in Cagayan mayor Ruma’s fatal shooting
The Special Investigation Task Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP) is “actively developing significant leads that may lead to a breakthrough in the investigation” into the fatal shooting of Rizal, Cagayan Mayor Joel Ruma, the PNP said Monday.
"We are working around the clock to uncover the truth, apprehend those responsible, and deliver justice to the family of Mayor Ruma and the people of Rizal, Cagayan. Rest assured that the PNP is exhausting all efforts to resolve this case swiftly and decisively," PNP Chief Police General Rommel Marbil said in a statement.
However, no specific details were revealed to avoid compromising the investigation.
Ruma was shot during a campaign rally on April 23, with the bullet entering the shoulder and exiting through the upper to middle right side of his back.
He was brought to Tuao District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival at 10:31 p.m.
Following the shooting incident, PNP intensified its visibility operations to ensure safety and security during the election period, particularly in areas considered election hotspots.
“We call on the public to remain vigilant and cooperative, and to immediately report any information that may aid in the swift resolution of the case,” Marbil said.
