141 sea turtle hatchlings released into sea in Davao

MANILA, Philippines - Some 141 newly hatched hawksbill sea turtles were released into the sea Friday by the Punta Dumalag nursery in Matina Aplaya, Davao City. The turtle (pawikan) nursery has since released over 3,000 hatchlings, GMA regional network news reported Friday. Mutya Ng Dabaw first runner-up Vida May Ko led in the release of the turtles into the Punta Dumalag Sea, said Bobby Onin of the Task Force Pawikan. Onin hoped the task force’s pawikan project could contribute to the country’s efforts in preserving the endangered hawksbill species. He added that only one mother hawksbill is laying eggs in the nursery and there are still over 800 eggs waiting to be hatched in the sanctuary’s incubation area. - GMANews.TV
