Cloudburst struck 77 houses in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental
A cloudburst destroyed at least 77 houses in Kabankalan City, Province of Negros Occidental.
Intense, heavy rainfall with strong gusts of wind hit an area of Kabankalan City on August 3, 2025.
A resident took a video of the strong winds and rainfall in Barangay Bantayan. The adverse weather condition that lasted for over five minutes blew away galvanized iron (GI) sheets and other parts of the houses.
Another video showed roof materials snagged in power lines. House materials stripped by the strong winds were scattered on the road. A number of trees was toppled.
“Matindi ang ulan at hangin, kinabahan ako. Hindi ko pa naisip na buhawi, basta hangin lang. Ngunit after lumabas kami, matindi pala. Naputol ang mga puno sa paligid,” Silmer Escobin, a resident, said.
The Local Government Unit (LGU) confirmed that “76 houses were partially damaged while one was totally damaged.”
“Malakas ang hangin at buhawi. Yun ang tumama sa upper barangay. Karamihan sa kanilang mga bubong nilipad, ang kanilang mga dingding. Maraming bahay ang na-damage. Malakas talaga. Kung hindi malakas, hindi masisira ang mga bahay doon,” said Elbert Javellana, head of Kabankalan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Affected families were provided food packs.
The LGU has mulled on financial aid for the affected residents. —GMA Regional TV
