Death of 2 navy personnel in Sarangani under probe

The Philippine Navy on Thursday said a thorough investigation is ongoing into the drowning of its two personnel in Maitum, Sarangani Province.

“A thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the Philippine Navy said in a statement.

The Philippine Navy mourned the loss of its two personnel who died during a recreational diving activity in Sarangani on Monday.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them of our full support during this difficult time,” the Philippine Navy said.

The military also vowed assistance to their families.

“We are providing full assistance to the bereaved families as part of our commitment to their welfare. Above all, we recognize and honor the service and dedication of our fallen sailors to the country and the Filipino people,” it added.

According to the Philippine Navy, the recreational activity was authorized as the involved personnel were on official leave and wellness break.

The Philippine Navy said it is reviewing and enhancing its protocols for both recreational and operational diving activities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The victims, aged 48 and 50, were conducting a recreational site diving survey 1.2 nautical miles from the shore.

They went missing for more than an hour until they were found floating and unconscious in open water. The two were brought to a hospital but were declared dead upon arrival.

Their colleagues believe the two divers reached a deep portion of the sea when they encountered difficulty breathing underwater. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
