Sultan Kudarat dump truck mishap kills teen, 7 others — PRO 12

A dump truck with 23 people on board fell into a ravine in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat on Wednesday, killing eight passengers including a minor, according to the Police Regional Office 12 (PRO 12).

The police on Thursday said the mini-dump truck, which was heading to Cotabato City from Barangay Poloy-Poloy in Lebak town, passed a curved section of the road in Barangay Christianuevo around 5:20 p.m.

"Upon reaching a downhill curved section of the road in Barangay Christianuevo, the vehicle's brakes malfunctioned, causing the driver to lose control," the police said.

"The truck bumped into concrete debris from ongoing road construction and subsequently fell into a ravine. As a result, the driver and his passengers sustained injuries," it added.

The driver and 20 passengers were immediately brought to South Upi Municipal Hospital, while two other passengers were brought to Sultan Kudarat District Hospital for medical treatment.

However, eight of them were declared dead on arrival. One of the deceased was 14 years old. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
