Juvenile striped dolphin gets stranded in Cebu, dies after rescue attempt

A juvenile striped dolphin was found stranded and injured along the baywalk of Daanbantayan, Cebu, but later died after rescue efforts.

In Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Friday, witnesses *John and *Jess said that the dolphin got trapped in a net, so they immediately called the municipality for assistance. However, they claimed that no help was given.

Because of this, *Jess went out to the seawall, took hold of the dolphin’s tail, and pulled it toward the deeper section of the sea to release it. They later found out that the dolphin had died.

According to Mindanao State University - General Santos City College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences faculty Glenville Castrence, the dolphin was still young and possibly got stranded due to “ghost fishing.”

"'Yung mga sirang lambat na tinatapon lang sa dagat, possible na nagkaroon ng entanglement ‘yung dolphin natin,” Castrence.

He noted that while the group’s intention to help the stranded dolphin was commendable, there is a proper protocol for responding to such situations.

“Sa protocol kasi ng Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network, mas maganda na ‘wag silang ibalik and then mag-antay na lang ng trained professional na may kaalaman tungkol sa pag-revive nitong mga dolphin na stranded natin,” he said.

He explained that stranded marine animals may have existing diseases or injuries, and they often require specialized medical attention or medical care.
