Plastic bags turn into raincoats among earthquake survivors amid rains in Cebu
A fisherman gave out plastic bags, which were supposedly for fish, to other earthquake survivors in Medellin, Cebu, who had ended up sleeping by the roadside due to the threat of aftershocks.
According to Ian Cruz’s report in “24 Oras” on Friday, Jesan Bolotano said that he and other survivors resorted to the plastic he gave out to keep themselves dry from the rains.
“I feel bad for us because they were only sitting on the ground,” he said.
The survivors said that they can still breathe underneath the plastic, and they have enough room for their legs.
“We did not have a hard time using the plastic because we can still breathe and sit in it. There’s enough space for our legs,” said Imelda Bolotano.
Sinkhole
The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City caused damage to several infrastructures, including historical churches in nearby towns.
For instance, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa De Lima in Daanbantayan, which was built in 1886, was not spared from the quake’s wrath. Hence, masses are being held for the meantime in the chapel beside.
Cracks on the roads and on the buildings are also evident in Daanbantayan. Due to the damages in the municipal hall, the city council had to hold a session in a nearby open space.
In Sitio Mayjo in Barangay Paypay, a sinkhole caught the attention of the residents following the earthquake.
According to the report, authorities estimated that the sinkhole is 4-meters deep. It warned the nearby residents of the danger living near the hole.
“I’m nervous in that kind of situation. We have to sleep outside every night and we cannot stay inside our home in the morning because of the threat of the sinkhole,” said Jhepone Racem Granada, whose house is near the sinkhole.
Another sinkhole is also found in the seashore in the same barangay.
Dog savior
Also in Barangay Paypay, the family of Angelita Postrero and their pet dog, Luke, were crushed underneath the rubble during the earthquake.
The dog was restless for hours before the earthquake. But Angelita’s husband and 8-year-old child were not injured because Luke saved them.
The family was already treated. Meanwhile, Luke was treated by an organization after suffering injuries in his legs and its private part.
“We were thankful for him because he was there and he saved my husband and child,” an emotional Angelita said. –Vince Angelo Ferreras/NB, GMA Integrated News
