BIR extends tax filing, payment deadline in earthquake-hit Cebu

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has extended the deadline for the filing of tax returns and payment for taxpayers in Cebu, which was recently hit by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in the area.

In an advisory, the BIR said the deadline for the filing of tax returns and payment of corresponding taxes, as well as the submission of other required documents for the month of October may be filed and paid on or before October 31, 2025.

This covers taxpayers under the jurisdiction of Revenue District Offices in Mandaue City, Cebu City (North), Cebu City (South), Talisay City, and the Large Taxpayers in Cebu, and all the deadlines falling within October 2025.

“This extension allows our taxpayers sufficient time to comply with their tax obligations without adding to the burdens caused by the calamity. This reaffirms our commitment to responsive, compassionate, and excellent taxpayer service, especially during times of crisis,” BIR Commission Romeo Lumagui Jr. said.

Bogo, Cebu, was hit by the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the area last Tuesday evening, with a depth of 5 kilometers and tectonic in origin.

Latest data available from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that the death toll was recorded at 72, with 559 injured, with the numbers subject to validation. There were some  547,394 people or 155,094 families affected.

More than 30 sinkholes have since emerged in San Remigio, Cebu following the earthquake, with authorities expecting that the number could still rise. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
