Magnitude 5.0 aftershock jolts Manay, Davao Oriental


A magnitude 5.0 aftershock struck offshore Manay town in Davao Oriental early Wednesday, October 15, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

PHIVOLCS said the aftershock occurred at 3:26 a.m., with a magnitude of 5.0, located 48 kilometers northeast of Manay, at a depth of 12 km.

 

 

The movement was tectonic in origin.

PHIVOLCS said no damage and no aftershocks are expected.

Meanwhile, six other aftershocks, with magnitude 4.0 or more, occurred early Wednesday, October 15, according to PHIVOLCS:

magnitude 4.2 at 12 a.m.: 39 km northeast of Manay
magnitude 4.1 at 12:18 a.m.: 29 km northeast of Manay
magnitude 4.9 at 1:23 a.m.: 72 km northeast of Manay
magnitude 4.6 at 2:17 a.m.: 85 km northeast of Manay
magnitude 4.0 at 2:18 a.m.: 54 km northeast of Manay
magnitude 4.3 at 2:50 a.m.: 40 km southeast of Manay
 

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Tuesday said the reported fatalities in the magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 doublet earthquakes offshore Manay, Davao Oriental last October 10 increased to nine.

A total of 889,000 people were affected by the impact of the earthquake. Of which, 12,768 people or 3,176 families were staying in evacuation centers.

Castillo said 2,575 houses were damaged—2,231 partially and 344 totally. Aside from this, damage to infrastructure worth P100 million was reported.

A total of 1,303 aftershocks have been recorded following the October 10 earthquake as of 12 noon on Tuesday, PHILVOCS said. —LDF/KG, GMA Integrated News
