Damaged house, schools reported so far due to Surigao del Norte earthquake

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) - Caraga said several establishments were partially damaged due to the magnitude 6.0 earthquake in General Luna, Surigao del Norte on Friday morning.

In an update as of 12 noon, OCD Caraga information officer Carlo Becera told GMA News Online that the following buildings were damaged: 

  • one house in San Benito, Siargao Island
  • the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office in San Benito, Siargao Island
  • one classroom at Maribojoc Elementary School in San Benito, Siargao Island
  • one classroom at Nueva Estrella Central Elementary School in Socorro, Siargao Island 

Classes have been suspended in 36 local government units (LGUs) in Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, and Agusan del Sur.

No reported damage on bridges and roads have been reported so far, according to OCD - Caraga.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake was recorded 13 kilometers from General Luna town at 7:03 a.m. on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 28 kilometers.

Intensity V was felt in General Luna, Claver, Pilar, Placer, San Benito, San Isidro, and Socorro in Surigao del Norte; as well as in Basilisa, Cagdianao, Dinagat, and San Jose in Dinagat Islands.

A total of 113 aftershocks have been recorded as of 8 a.m. 

According to PHIVOLCS, the Philippine Trench generated the magnitude 6.0 earthquake.

PHIVOLCS said none of the recorded aftershocks were felt. The strength of the aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.2 to 4.4. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
