Phivolcs warns vs. lahar flow from Kanlaon Volcano amid Typhoon Tino

PHIVOLCS warns vs. lahar flow from Kanlaon Volcano amid Typhoon Tino

Phivolcs on Monday warned residents near Kanlaon Volcano of a possible lahar flow due to the rain brought by Typhoon Tino.

“Prolonged and heavy rainfall may generate generally channel-confined post-eruption lahars and sediment-laden streamflows on major channels draining the southern and western slopes of Kanlaon Volcano,” the monitoring agency said in a statement.

It added that potentially hot lahars and sediment-laden streamflows may particularly occur along the Tamburong/Ibid Creek in Biak-na-Bato and Baji-Baji Falls and Talaptapan Creek in Cabacungan, La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

“Communities along and downstream of channels on the southern and western slopes are advised to be prepared in case evacuation becomes necessary and to avoid traversing affected streams even those farther downslope of the volcano,” Phivolcs said.

It explained that lahar flow can form when heavy rain erodes loose material from the deposits left by the October 24, 2025 eruption and from recent ashfall or ash emissions.

Based on PAGASA’s 11 a.m. weather bulletin, eight areas are under Signal No. 4,

Meanwhile, several areas in the Negros Island are under Signal No. 3 and 2.

Alert Level 2, or moderate level of volcanic unrest, still prevails in Kanlaon Volcano.

Under Alert Level 2, entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the flying of any aircraft close to the volcano are prohibited. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BM, GMA Integrated News
