DOE: 1.4M households have no power amid Tino’s onslaught

The Department of Energy (DOE) on Wednesday said about 1.4 million household power connections in the Visayas are still without electricity following the onslaught of Typhoon Tino.

At a virtual press briefing, DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said that the number of affected connections could be equivalent to approximately seven million residents who are still reeling from power interruptions due to the weather disturbance.

Fuentebella said power restoration efforts are underway for the affected households, but improvements in weather conditions are still needed.

For her part, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said, “I understand that it’s about seven million people that are affected… This is a big task. But we are assuring you that we are working hard. Even at nighttime, there are people working on the ground so we can restore it within a few hours.”

Data from the National Electrification Administration (NEA) showed that as of 2 p.m. on November 4, 2025, a total of 53 electric cooperatives were affected by Tino.

Affected electric cooperatives are located in 10 regions including Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga and Negros Island.

Of the 53 affected electric cooperatives, 17 are already under normal operations, while 24 are experiencing partial interruptions and nine are still reeling from total power interruptions. Meanwhile, at least three electric coops are yet to report their status.

The NEA said electric coops so far incurred P836,868.38 worth of damage.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), on the other hand, reported that as of 5 p.m. on November 5, 2025, four 69 kilovolt (kV), one 138 kV and another 230 kV lines remain unavailable. —RF, GMA Integrated News
