At least 40 PDC events recorded in Mayon Volcano since Thursday midnight

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded at least 40 discrete pyroclastic density current (PDC) events at the Mayon Volcano since Thursday midnight.

In a social media post, PHIVOLCS said the number had been counted since 12 a.m. on Thursday.

The agency recorded another incident of dome-collapse pyroclastic density current from the summit of Mayon Volcano at 6:51 a.m. which generated 1,000 meters of grayish co-PDC ash clouds before drifting west-northwest.

PDCs are mixtures of fragmented volcanic particles (pyroclastics), hot gases, and ashes that rush down the volcanic slopes or rapidly outward from a source vent at high speeds, PHIVOLCS said in an earlier interview.

Due to the PDC events, thin ashfall has been reported over Legazpi City, Ligao City, Bacacay, Camalig and Anislag, Daraga, Albay.

Alert Level 3 or intensified unrest or magmatic unrest remains over the volcano as residents are advised against entering the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone. —Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/AOL, GMA Integrated News
