24/7 search, rescue ops to save workers in Cebu City landslide

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival visits site of landfill landslide

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival on Thursday evening assured that authorities are conducting 24/7 search and rescue operations to save 30 persons trapped by a landslide that occurred at a landfill site in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu.

Archival posted several updates on his Facebook page after he arrived at the landfill site to oversee the search and rescue operations.

“After receiving updates from our teams on the ground, I directed all rescue units to continue operations 24/7, all out,” the Cebu City Mayor said in an update logged at 10:40 p.m.

He said he gave clear instructions to responders to continue the search and rescue activities without stopping as they still have hope that they will find survivors.

In another update on social media at 11:20 p.m., Archival said he talked to family members of workers who have not yet been accounted for and assured that efforts are ongoing 24/7 to save their loved ones.

“I have clearly instructed our rescuers to continue their all-out efforts, because there is still hope. Let us continue our work, let us continue to pray, and the safety of life remains our first priority,” he said in Cebuano.

He also spoke with the management of the private landfill facility, the police, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and other agencies to ensure a clear and organized response.

Archival said the management of the landfill site assured that they will do everything for the welfare of the workers and their families and vowed to fully cooperate if an investigation is conducted.

According to a “Saksi” report on Thursday, one died and 30 others remain missing after the landslide hit the landfill site at around 4 p.m.

Nine were rescued so far but one died in the hospital while undergoing treatment.
