WATCH: Mayon Volcano sheds pyroclastic density currents or 'uson'

Mayon Volcano in Albay continued to shed pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or 'uson' on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In a video taken at 9:46 p.m. Friday and shared by PHIVOLCS, incandescent PDCs and rockfalls could be seen being shed from the summit lava dome of the volcano.

The PDCs and rockfall fell onto the Mi-isi, Bonga and Basud Gullies.

"A total of 150 rockfalls and 90 PDCs have been recorded by the Mayon Volcano Network on 09 January 2026," PHIVOLCS said.

A photo taken at 6:14 p.m. by PHIVOLCS showed the dome-collapse PDCs or "uson" at Mayon Volcano on Friday night.

"Alert Level 3 prevails over Mayon and entry into the 6-km Permanent Danger Zone must be prohibited," PHIVOLCS said.

In the past 24 hours, the volcano also emitted 195 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, it said in its bulletin issued Saturday.

Moderate plumes rose up to 500 meters high before drifting in the west-northwest and southwest direction.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that Mayon Volcano poses hazards such as:

  • Rockfalls or landslides or avalanches
  • Ballistic fragments
  • Lava flows and lava fountaining
  • Pyroclastic density currents
  • Moderate-sized explosions
  • Lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall
