Mayon Volcano had 256 rockfalls, 41 PDCs —PHIVOLCS

Mayon Volcano pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson”

The Mayon Volcano in Albay had 256 rockfall events and 41 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or "uson" in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Sunday.

The volcano also continues to emit lava, it added. A crater glow remains visible to the naked eye.

On Saturday, 777 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were emitted by Mayon Volcano.

Moderate plumes were observed rising out of the crater up to 200 meters high, before drifting northeast.

The volcano edifice remains inflated, PHIVOLCS said.

Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) is still in effect at Mayon Volcano, it added.

The agency advised the public that entry into the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and entry without vigilance into the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) should not be allowed.

Likewise, flying aircraft close to the volcano should be prohibited.

PHIVOLCS said Mayon Volcano poses hazards such as:

  • rockfalls or landslides or avalanches;
  • ballistic fragments;
  • lava flows and lava fountaining;
  • PDCs;
  • moderate-sized explosions; and
  • lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
