Evacuation in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur begins amid Basyang threat
The local government of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur has begun enforcing preemptive evacuations in preparation for the effects of Tropical Depression Basyang, which is expected to make landfall on Thursday or Friday.
According to James Paolo Yap’s Wednesday report on “24 Oras,” the Hinatuan LGU conducted preemptive evacuations in five island barangays, targeting 500 to 700 families while closely monitoring flood-prone areas.
Hinatuan Mayor Atty. Tito Cañedo III said if the direction and strength of the wind do not change and hit their town, a forced evacuation will be implemented.
Classes in Hinatuan and other areas like Cebu City have been suspended.
Authorities also raised a blue alert status, signaling that all heavy equipment must be prepared for potential rescue operations. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
