5 volcanic earthquakes recorded in Kanlaon — PHIVOLCS

Five volcanic earthquakes were recorded at the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in a 24-hour period on Saturday.

In its advisory on Sunday, PHIVOLCS said the volcano also emitted 2,880 tonnes of sulfur dioxide.

A 300-meter high plume was observed in a moderate emission that drifted in a southwest direction.

State volcanologists said Kanlaon is still at Alert Level 2 with the volcano edifice as inflated.

Entry into the four kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone is not allowed. Aircraft are prohibited from flying close to the volcano.

The public is advised that possible hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions as well as precursory magmatic activity can occur at any moment. —RF, GMA Integrated News
