LTFRB summons bus operator over mishap in Sipocot, Camarines Sur
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Sunday summoned the operator of the passenger bus that fell off a cliff along the Maharlika Highway in Sipocot, Camarines Sur.
In a statement, LTFRB chairperson Vigor Mendoza II said they want to know if proper maintenance was followed and if the driver observed road safety protocols.
“We have been consistent in our message to PUV drivers and operators to prioritize road safety because what is involved here is safety of the passengers who trust their life and limb to them,” Mendoza said.
“We will not stop in reminding the PUV sector and we will not stop in running after the violators of the franchise rules and regulations in the interest and welfare of the passengers and all road users,” he added.
According to a report by Vonne Aquino on “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday, 11 passengers were injured when the passenger bus’ brakes supposedly malfunctioned.
The driver steered the bus to the side but the bus ended up falling into a ravine.
The LTFRB said the accident allegedly happened on April 9 at 5 p.m.
The LTFRB’s show cause order (SCO) directed the bus operator was tasked to submit the road worthiness test and inspection report of the involved vehicle.
The bus operator was also told to subject the bus driver to a drug test and mandatory driver’s proficiency test.
The bus operator was also given five days to explain in writing why it should not be penalized over the road crash.
Mendoza reminded bus operators and drivers to observe road worthiness procedures of their public utility vehicles (PUVs) and ensure that their drivers are always mentally and physically fit to drive. — JMA, GMA News
