Forest fire hits Bontoc mountains; disrupts water lines, tourism
Firefighters continued to battle a forest fire in the mountains of Bontoc, Mountain Province on Monday, April 20, 2026, as authorities worked to keep the blaze from reaching nearby communities and critical resources.
The fire, which broke out a day earlier in Barangay Samoki, has prompted ongoing suppression efforts, including the creation of firelines and clearing operations near homes and animal enclosures to prevent the flames from spreading further.
Officials said the blaze has already damaged some private water sources after plastic and PVC pipes were destroyed, raising concerns over access to water in affected areas.
Authorities have remained on alert to ensure the fire does not encroach on residential zones, while an investigation into its cause and extent is underway.
“Maging responsable po at huwag nating sunugin ang anuman rubbish (basura) kasi baka ito po ‘yung (maaaring) nagku-cause ng sunog,” FO1 Joseph Deligen Jr., public information officer of the Bontoc Fire Station, said.
The incident has also affected nearby tourism in the Cordillera region. In Ifugao province, officials temporarily closed the trail leading to Tappiya Falls in Barangay Batad, Banaue, due to a fire incident along a cliffside route frequently used by tourists.
The Batad barangay council warned of possible rockfalls in the affected section of the trail, posing risks to trekkers. Tourists and guides have been advised to follow the closure and avoid the route for now.
As an alternative, visitors may use the Budyu Hanging Bridge to reach Tappiya Falls, authorities said.
