Minor Strombolian activity seen on Day 111 of Mayon’s effusive eruption
State volcanologists observed minor Strombolian activity anew at Mayon Volcano’s summit crater on Sunday evening, the 111th day of its effusive eruption.
Close-up footage shared by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) showed that the volcanic activity was recorded from 6:26 p.m. to 6:27 p.m. of April 26.
The footage was captured by the PHIVOLCS Quick Response Team, the agency said in posts on its social media accounts.
Minor Strombolian activity is defined as a low-level, intermittent explosion that launches lava fountains and magma fragments from the crater.
Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption persisted for the 111th consecutive day, producing incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson,” and frequent rockfalls.
PHIVOLCS reiterated that Alert Level 3 – or a high level of volcanic unrest – is still hoisted over Mayon Volcano.
This means that entry into its six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited. — JMA, GMA News
