Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island

Eighteen volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.

The volcano also emitted 2,062 tonnes of sulfur dioxide from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday, it added.

Meanwhile, voluminous plumes rising up to 200 meters tall were observed; these drifted southwest and southeast.

Alert Level 2 (Increased Unrest) prevails over Kanlaon Volcano, PHIVOLCS said.

It said entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) should not be allowed.

Likewise, flying aircraft close to the volcano should be prohibited.

PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, poses possible hazards such as:

  • sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions; and
  • precursory magmatic activity.
