The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Tuesday reported ash emission events from Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.

In an update, PHIVOLCS said ash the emissions occurred at 5:32 a.m. and 6:01 a.m., producing grayish plumes that rose up to 800 meters above the summit crater before drifting west.

The events were recorded by monitoring cameras at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City.

Alert Level 2, or increased unrest, remains in effect over the volcano.

In its 24-hour monitoring summary from 12 a.m. Monday to 12 a.m. Tuesday, PHIVOLCS logged a total of five ash emission events lasting between three and 60 minutes.

The agency also recorded 22 volcanic earthquakes, including five volcanic tremors with durations ranging from two to 39 minutes.

Sulfur dioxide flux was measured at 2,975 tonnes on Monday.

Meanwhile, plume emissions reached up to 1,500 meters and were described as voluminous, drifting toward the west, south, and southeast directions.

Ground deformation data showed that the volcano edifice remains inflated.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.

It also warned against flying aircraft close to the volcano due to the risk posed by sudden ash emissions.

The agency reminded the public of possible hazards, including sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and the potential onset of precursory magmatic activity. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA News
