NGCP says no transmission facilities damaged after Maguindanao del Sur earthquake
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Sunday said its transmission facilities were not damaged by the earthquake that struck Maguindanao del Sur on Saturday.
"Power transmission services in Southwestern Mindanao remain stable despite the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred 4 kilometers northwest of General Salipada K. Pendatun, Maguindanao del Sur at 7:25PM today, 16 May 2026," NGCP said in an advisory on social media.
"The grid remains intact as there had been no reported damaged transmission facilities in Southwestern Mindanao and nearby areas where the earthquake was felt," it added.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the earthquake that struck Maguindanao del Sur at 7:25 p.m. Saturday as having magnitude 5.0.
The quake's epicenter was located 9 km northwest of General Salipada K. Pendatun, Maguindanao del Sur. The earthquake hit at a depth of 18 km.
Intensity V was recorded in General Salipada K. Pendatun, Maguindanao del Sur; M'lang, Cotabato; Tantangan, South Cotabato; and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.
Intensity IV was reported in Buluan, Maguindanao del Sur; Norala, Polomolok, Tupi, Tampakan, and Koronadal City, South Cotabato; Senator Ninoy Aquino, Isulan, Tacurong City, Esperanza, Lutayan and Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Kabacan, President Roxas, and Carmen, Cotabato; and Malungon, Sarangani.
Other areas in Mindanao such as Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, and Lanao del Sur experienced lower intensities.
PHIVOLCS said damage and aftershocks may be expected. —KG, GMA News
