More than 200 families were evacuated due to flooding in Barangay Matina Pangi, Davao City, following heavy rains evening on Monday, May 18, 2026.

According to a report by GMA Super Radyo Davao, the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said the Matinal Pangi River reached critical levels and overflowed, eventually.

Some residents affected returned to their homes morning on Tuesday, May 19. Others opted to stay at the barangay hall or with their relatives.

Floodwaters also entered the St. Mary of the Perpetual Rosary Parish in Buhangin.

Piles of soil, mud, and fallen trees can be seen along a portion of Carlos P. Garcia Highway, as of 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

A bridge connecting Callawa and Mandug has been impassable after it collapsed.

Authorities are still assessing the damage, as of this writing.

Based on initial report, at least 11 barangays were affected.

A 21-year-old man, believed to have died from electrocution, was also found floating in floodwaters in Barangay Buhangin.

Work, class suspension

Face-to-face classes and school activities at all levels in public and private schools, as well as work in all national and local government offices in Davao City, are suspended on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, after heavy rains caused flooding in the city.

The class and work suspension was ordered to give way to clearing operations and ensure the safety and welfare of affected residents.

The city government said offices performing safety and security, health, social services and disaster and emergency response services will continue regular operations.

Meanwhile, private offices and establishments are given the discretion to suspend work but are encouraged to do so for the welfare and safety of their employees.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather experienced in the city was caused by the easterlies and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). —With reports from John Ryan Calonia and Francis Timbal, GMA Super Radyo Davao, GMA Regional TV News
