An ongoing pyroclastic density current (PDC) event, locally known as uson, was recorded at Mayon Volcano on Sunday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS said the PDC event generated grayish plumes drifting east-northeast.

“The PDC travelled approximately 2000 meters along Mi-isi Gully and generated grayish plumes that rose up to 1800 meters above mean sea level before drifting east-northeast,” the advisory read.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, and entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited.

PHIVOLCS explained that pyroclastic materials consist of fragmented volcanic particles. When mixed with hot gases and ash, they form pyroclastic density currents—fast-moving flows of volcanic debris and gas.—MCG, GMA News
