SVD mission communities isolated following strong earthquake, seeks assistance
The religious congregation of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in Mindanao is asking for assistance for communities on Balut Island, Sarangani Island, and Nuing that were severely affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on Monday morning.
"Our SVD parishes in these areas have suffered significant damage. The convent in Balut Island has been partially destroyed, the church in Nuing has sustained major destruction, and many families are now facing uncertainty and hardship," the SVD Philippines Southern Province Task Force reported.
"The situation is further complicated by the lack of electricity and the limited means of communication on the islands, making relief and recovery efforts even more challenging," they added.
In a CBCP News report, the Task Force said at least four people were killed and several injured, including two priests who are now safe.
The task force also reported that a group led by acting provincial Fr. Tony Salas, SVD only reached Malapatan, the town before Glan because the national highway is impassable due to landslides and severely damaged roads.
"The municipalities beyond Glan, including Nuing — our newest mission station — are now completely isolated. The situation remains critical. There is currently no electricity, no water supply, and access to Nuing is impossible as all roads leading to the area are blocked or destroyed," they said.
The congregationis seeking assistance for food, clean water, temporary shelter, medical assistance, and other basic necessities. They also need support for the rehabilitation of our parish facilities. — BAP, GMA News
