The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday said it is coordinating with authorities to provide support to those affected by an incident at a private school in General Trias, Cavite that left several learners injured, as it expressed concern for those affected.

“We are closely coordinating with school authorities and relevant government agencies to ensure that the affected learners receive the necessary support, assistance, and appropriate interventions,” the department said in a statement.

According to a Facebook post by General Trias City Mayor Luis “Jon-Jon” Ferrer IV on Tuesday, seven Grade 5 students were injured following an alleged stabbing incident by a Grade 8 student using a kitchen knife at a school in Barangay Sta. Clara.

Ferrer said he immediately proceeded to the school together with representatives from the General Trias police, city social welfare office and DepEd to assess the situation, ensure immediate response, and conduct an investigation.

Classes were also suspended as part of standard operating procedures (SOP), the mayor said.

According to the DepEd, its regional and division offices remain on standby to extend additional assistance as needed.

The agency also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the learners involved and to refrain from spreading unverified information as authorities investigate the incident.

“As the matter involves minors, we urge the public to respect the privacy, dignity, and rights of all children involved and to refrain from spreading unverified information,” the agency said.

“We likewise ask everyone to allow the proper authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation,” it added.

The department reiterated that the safety, well-being, and mental health of learners remain among its top priorities.

“The safety, well-being, and mental health of our learners remain among the Department’s top priorities. We remain committed to ensuring schools are safe and supportive environments for all students,” DepEd said.

The agency did not disclose further details about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation and the involvement of minors.
