Authorities recovered the remains of a landslide victim in Barangay Congan, Glan, Sarangani on June 18 with the help of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) working dogs “Thalia” and “Siri.”

The PCG, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office carried out the search and retrieval operation.

In a statement, the PCG said Coast Guard Working Dogs (CGWDs) Thalia and Siri “once again demonstrated their skill” after successfully locating the victim’s remains.

The body was immediately turned over to the proper authorities.

The PCG said it continues to strengthen training for its CGWDs to boost search-and-rescue operations, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to improve disaster response preparedness.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Space Agency on Saturday released satellite data showing landslides triggered by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8.

PhilSA’s map identified landslide-hit areas in the Glan, Sarangani barangays of Calabanit, Ilaya, San Vicente, Congan and Calpidong, as well as in the Jose Abad Santos barangays of Butuan, Patulang, Sugal, Nuing, San Isidro and Batulan.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier reported 77 fatalities from the earthquake.—MCG, GMA News
