The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) on Monday condemned the reported shooting of radio broadcaster Jay Lavapiez in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City.

In a statement, PTFoMS said it is conducting an investigation into the incident with the Philippine National Police Media Security Vanguards.

“Lavapiez survived the ambush while driving along a national highway in Barangay Cagay on his way to his radio station. At least two motorcycle-riding suspects reportedly blocked his vehicle and opened fire on the broadcaster,” the task force said.

Authorities recovered four spent shells at the scene, according to PTFoMS.

The task force said the attempt on Lavapiez’s life underscores the urgent need to strengthen protections for journalists.

“We condemn all acts of violence and intimidation against journalists and assert that such actions have no place in a democratic society,” PTFoMS said.

PTFoMS reiterated its support for Lavapiez and the broader media community, citing the role of press freedom in a democratic society.

“We stand in solidarity with Mr. Lavapiez and all media professionals, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding their rights and security," it said.

The freedom of the press is essential to our democracy, and we will continue to advocate for measures that protect those who strive to uphold this freedom every day,” the task force added.—MCG, GMA News
