Dumanjug, Cebu to confiscate students' phones starting June 29, 2026
The town of Dumanjug, Cebu will confiscate students' mobile phones if they are brought to campus starting Monday, June 29, 2026.
In a social media post on Sunday, Mayor Efren "Gungun" Gica called the move a "total ban" on phones at school.
"There are no phones allowed in school. Starting Monday, if a student brings a phone, it will be confiscated and only returned at the end of the school year. If you do not wish to follow this policy, you have the option to transfer your children to another municipality," he said.
"We want our kids to read, study, and interact with their classmates.
"At home, we expect parents to talk to their children, follow up on what they learned in school, and encourage healthy relationships between siblings and parents," he added.
In a post on June 24, the municipality's Public Information Office said that the mobile phone ban is among safety measures being implemented in schools. These include tighter security steps such as inspections at the entrance of students and teachers; prohibition of dangerous objects such as knives and guns; and the prohibition of cell phones at school beginning June 24. — BM, GMA News
