Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes off Surigao del Norte

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

According to PHIVOLCS, the tectonic earthquake occurred at 8:39 a.m. Its epicenter was located 34 kilometers northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Intensity III was felt in San Francisco, Southern Leyte.

Intensity II was reported in Hinundayan, Pintuyan, Saint Bernard, and Silago in Southern Leyte, as well as Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

Instrumental Intensity III was also recorded in San Francisco, Southern Leyte, while Instrumental Intensity II was logged in Surigao City; Hinundayan and Silago, Southern Leyte.

Instrumental Intensity I was recorded in Mahaplag and Abuyog, Leyte; San Juan, Southern Leyte; and San Fernando, Bukidnon.

PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected, but aftershocks are expected. —VAL, GMA News
