Dog rescued from Baguio landslide debris nearly 24 hours later

Rescue workers on Monday saved a dog from the debris almost 24 hours after a landslide hit Barangay Guisad Surong in Baguio City amid the heavy rain caused by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

According to the Baguio City Public Information Office, the dog was reportedly among the victims in the landslide.

“Amid the devastating Guisad Surong landslide, a dog was miraculously rescued from the debris after almost 24 hours, bringing a small but meaningful moment of hope in the midst of heartbreak,” the Baguio PIO said.

As of 8 p.m., the office said eight persons have died because of the landslide while three remain missing. Two have been rescued.

The death toll went up to the eight after one of the survivors died in the hospital.

The PIO said search, rescue, and retrieval operations remain ongoing at ground zero as responders continue their efforts to locate those still unaccounted for.

Authorities said the landslide occurred at around 7 p.m. Sunday amid continuous heavy rains. It struck three houses and affected five families.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said residents in nearby high-risk areas had already been evacuated.
He also said 13 other landslides had recently been recorded in Baguio City due to the heavy rains, bringing the total to 14.

Meanwhile, search, rescue, and retrieval operations continue, with several victims still missing. Rescuers remain on rotation as they work tirelessly in dangerous conditions.

The PIO urged the public in Baguio to stay alert for signs of danger, including falling trees, soil erosion, and ground cracks. –NB, GMA News
