Mindanao grid under yellow alert on August 11, 2026

The Mindanao power grid was placed under yellow alert as available capacity neared peak demand on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

NGCP said the yellow alert was scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The grid had an available capacity of 2,672 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,527 MW.

According to the latest grid status report, 12 power plants were on forced outage as of August 2026—seven had been offline since July, one since June, two since January, one since 2025, and two since 2024.

Five other power plants were operating at derated capacities.

These outages and deratings resulted in a total of 709.1 MW of capacity being unavailable to the grid.

NGCP said factors contributing to the yellow alert included the maintenance outage of GNPK 2, which began on July 28, 2026, and the extended outage of SEC 2.

The emergency shutdown of GNPK 1 on August 9, 2026, due to a boiler tube leak also contributed to the reduced available capacity.

NGCP said a yellow alert is declared when the operating margin of the power grid is insufficient to meet the required contingency requirement. — GMA Regional TV
