WATCH: Kanlaon Volcano superheated plume activity seen
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island was observed to have had superheated plume activity at its crater on Friday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
PHIVOLCS shared a time-lapse footage of the said activity recorded between 11:05 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
"Alert Level 2 prevails over Kanlaon Volcano," it said.
In its bulletin issued Saturday, PHIVOLCS said eight volcanic earthquakes were logged from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday.
Kanlaon Volcano emitted 2,092 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday.
Moderate plumes rose up to 100 meters tall before drifting in the general east and southwest directions.
PHIVOLCS reminded the public anew that entry into the 4-km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying aircraft close to the volcano are prohibited.
Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, poses possible hazards such as the following, PHIVOLCS said:
- sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions
- precursory magmatic activity
