Kanlaon Volcano continues to emit voluminous ash; Alert Level 2 still in effect
Kanlaon Volcano continued to emit ash as of 11:23 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
In time-lapse camera footage released by PHIVOLCS, Kanlaon Volcano could be seen generating a voluminous grayish plume. The emission rose 150 meters above the summit crater before drifting southeast due to strong winds.
“Alert Level 2 remains in effect over the volcano,” PHIVOLCS said.
In an earlier bulletin, from 12:00 a.m. Friday to 12:00 a.m. Saturday, the agency reported eight volcanic earthquakes at Kanlaon.
PHIVOLCS reminded the public that entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying aircraft near the volcano are strictly prohibited.
Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, continues to pose hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity, according to PHIVOLCS. —Lyjah Tiffany Bonzo/KG, GMA News
