The continuous heavy downpour over the weekend caused recurring landslides near a barangay in Sabtang,Batanes, the provincial disaster risk reduction and management office (PDRRMO) warned.

As of 5:33 am of Sunday, landslides have recurred near Barangay Chavayan.

"Continuous heavy rainfall since yesterday morning is causing recurrent landslides and rockslides along the road leading to Brgy. Chavayan. Even after initial clearing, falling rocks and mud debris continue to slide onto the carriageway," said Batanes PDRRMO.

Although clearing operations are ongoing, the PDRRMO said that "falling rocks and mud debris continue to slide onto the carriageway due to slope instability."

Due to the situation, authorities advised motorists against traveling along the affected roads.

Batanes is one of the areas in Luzon currently affected by the Southwest Monsoon or the Habagat.

The forecast showed Batanes could receive 50 to 100 millimeters of heavy rains on Sunday. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA News
