Ninoy Aquino receives #CardboardJustice

This day in 1983, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was shot in the tarmac of the Manila International Airport and his death became a trigger for the People Power Revolution in 1986.

Since his death, both his wife and his son have served as Presidents of the Republic and his favorite color has become irreversibly political. His politics, however, is more colorful.

Ninoy shares some things in common with President Rodrigo Duterte. Both are known to profess their love for the Filipino and, curiously, they're keen on "networking with the Reds."

Of course, Ninoy's affiliations proved to be dangerous. Being tagged a communist then or now has strong, perhaps even fatal implications. The Marcos dictatorship heightened the Red scare and alleged communists began disappearing and dying.

Years later, the comments section revealed that the dictatorship had been successful in blasting out this message: "Those who died deserved it."

Tagged "red," sympathy became scarce even for students in their teen. The similarities between the tagging then and the use of cardboard to declare guilt now did not escape Bong Banal.

Banal created a series of images in memory of Ninoy, adding a cardboard to photos from August 21, 1983 that reads "Bayani Tularan"

Banal's images have been met with mixed response. While others continue to pay respects, others branded Ninoy "traitor" and his followers "idiots." —ALG, GMA News
