Pagkamatay ng mga obrero sa Hanjin shipyard sa Subic nais paimbestigahan

MANILA – Nais ng isang mambabatas na magsagawa ng panibagong imbestigasyon ang Senado kaugnay sa dumadaming bilang ng mga manggagawang namamatay sa shipyard ng Hanjin Heavy Industries sa Redondo Peninsula sa loob ng Subic Bay Freeport sa Zambales. "Kapag mga puno nga ang pinapatay nababahala na tayo, paano kung mga tao pa kaya?" pahayag ni Sen. Pia Cayetano nitong Biyernes. Ang pahayag ay ginawa ng mambabatas matapos iulat na dalawa pang manggagawang Pinoy ang namatay nitong buwan sa 354 hektaryang construction area. Dahil sa pagkamatay nina Phillip Mendoza, 40-anyos, at Jose Vener Gil, 42, umakyat na umano sa 15 ang bilang ng mga manggagawang nasawi sa Hanjin shipyard mula ng buksan ang proyekto dalawang taon na ang nakalilipas. "The Hanjin shipyard has virtually become a modern-day killing field, but has any Hanjin official been jailed or even charged in court?" tanong ni Cayetano. "No one will contest how Hanjin infuses massive investments to the economy and provides jobs to 13,000 Filipinos. But none of these can justify the authorities' lack of conviction to punish those responsible and put a stop to the string of workers' deaths at Hanjin," idinagdag niya. Duda si Cayetano sa isinagawang pagsusuri ng Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) at Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) sa mga pamantayang pangkaligtasan sa pagtatrabaho sa loob ng Hanjin. "It's high time that the Senate labor committee steps in to find out how Hanjin appeared to have shielded itself from accountability by routinely arguing after every incident that the fatalities were merely subcontracted workers, and therefore not directly under their employ," ayon kay Cayetano. “It should also look into the so-called labor safety guidelines being implemented by the SBMA and whether the labor department is able to effectively exercise its oversight functions on Hanjin and its sub-contractors," idinagdag niya. - GMANews.TV
