Utang ng Arroyo govt umabot na sa P2.2 T - Escudero

MANILA – Isiniwalat ni Senador Francis Escudero na umabot na sa P2.2 trilyon ang inutang ng administrasyon ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal Arroyo mula nang maupo itong lider ng bansa noong 2001. Dahil dito, sinabi ng senador na sa loob lamang ng walong taong panunungkulan ni Arroyo ay nagawa nitong doblehin ang dinatnang utang ng pamahalaan. “The (Arroyo) administration’s stimulus plan should not stimulate government into borrowing more under the guise of helping the poor. The plan to expand government spending should be done without enlarging national debt and indenturing future generations," pahayag ng mambabatas. Si Arroyo - bilang dating bise presidente - ang pumalit kay dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada nang mapatalsik ang huli sa EDSA people power revolt noong 2001 dahil sa alegasyon ng katiwalian. “This has since doubled to P4.221 trillion by end of last year, which, by the way puts to shame Legacy’s double-your-money promo," puna ni Escudero. Sinabi ni Escudero na hindi rito nagtatapos ang kagulat-gulat na paglobo ng utang ng bansa dahil mas maraming salapi ang itinutustos ng pamahalaan sa pagbabayad ng interes at prinsipal simula noong 2001 hanggang 2008. “What rubs salt to the wound is that during the same period, we coughed up P4.436 trillion in interest and principal payments which should have reduced the mountain of a debt into a molehill and not the other way around," paliwanag ng senador. Sa kanyang pagtataya, nagbabayad ang sambayanang Filipino ng halagang P1.448 bilyon bawat araw sa inuutang na P759 milyon bawat araw. “The government’s credit panhandling will continue this year with a conservative deficit target of P177 billion, which translates to a daily debt of P484 million," aniya. “A government that will bow out in 15 months would be so reckless to dump IOUs that will be redeemed from Filipinos yet unborn," pahayag nito. Batay umano sa debt management record ng administrasyon, sinabi ni Escudero na walang dahilan upang gamitin ng gobyerno ang usapin ng krisis sa pananalapi bilang pantakip sa walang humpay na pangungutang. “We should carefully spend what we already have before we seek out credit.
